EFFICIENT IT ROLL-OUT ALONG A UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE
CHALLENGE
Rhätische Bahn AG operates an extensive rail network with decentralised workstations throughout the canton of Graubünden. As part of its IT modernisation programme, the company was looking for an implementation partner for two key tasks: upgrading existing multi-user workstations from Windows 10 to Windows 11 and replacing notebooks that had reached the end of their life cycle. The main challenge was to coordinate the rollout across numerous locations, continue to use existing devices and ensure smooth operation – while keeping the railway running and taking into account the availability of employees.
SOLUTION
MTF worked closely with Rhaetian Railway to meet the complex requirements of the rollout. Based on the defined requirements, a detailed rollout plan was drawn up, taking into account the various locations and the availability of employees. The notebooks were preconfigured centrally and delivered directly to employees. The multi-user devices were replaced across all locations by on-site technicians, with the existing systems being re-installed on Windows 11. During implementation, MTF supported end users as needed via the service desk and ensured smooth operation. At the end of the project, all IT assets were fully documented and the old devices were centrally recorded and handed over for recycling.

For over a century, the Rhaetian Railway has been connecting regions, people and business locations in the canton of Graubünden. It operates an extensive rail network of over 400 kilometres and transports around 16 million passengers annually. In addition to passenger and freight transport, the RhB is internationally renowned for its Bernina Express and Glacier Express panoramic trains and the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina Landscape’. Around 1,800 employees ensure safe, reliable and sustainable railway operations.
